DIAGRAM Tools

In keeping with the DIAGRAM Center goal of dramatically changing the way image and graphic content for accessible instructional materials (AIM) is produced and accessed, DIAGRAM both creates tools and partners with other organizations to develop tools that achieve this goal.

Poet is an open-source image description tool that allows crowdsourcing of image descriptions to reduce cost.  It includes a feature called Math Helper to transcribe math into a machine-readable format (MathML).

MathML Cloud

Tactile Graphics with a Voice (TGV) is a GR-code reading app that allows text within images to be read and voiced by a mobile device such as an iPhone or Android phone.

Standards & Guidelines

The DIAGRAM Center will publish information regarding standards and best practices as they relate to creating and accessing image descriptions. This page is an index to that information.

Diagrammar

Diagrammar is a framework for making images and graphics accessible.  It provides a structured way for image description data to be modeled, including multiple different types of descriptions for each image, teacher annotations, and pointers to tactile and graphic files.

Accessible Image Sample Book

The Accessible Image Sample Book provides a variety of concrete examples that show you how digital images can be made accessible, including sample code that you can use to make it easier to create accessible images in your own digital publications.

Image Description Guidelines

These guidelines were born from a partnership between the DIAGRAM center and the Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family National Center for Accessible Media at WGBH (NCAM).  The guidelines cover general recommendations as well as guidelines for describing specific types of images, such as maps or graphs.
